Additional Info

LASIK surgery, also known as laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a common type of refractive eye surgery. The procedure can correct specific types of vision problems, such as astigmatism, farsightedness, and nearsightedness. For most people, LASIK offers perfect vision and a permanent alternative to contact lenses or glasses.

Is LASIK right for me?

Patients can achieve 20/20 vision after a LASIK procedure. To find out if LASIK is the right vision correction solution for you, Dr. Gibbs reviews your medical history, asks about symptoms, and assesses your vision.

She completes a comprehensive eye exam and discusses the pros and cons of the procedure to determine if you’re a good candidate for LASIK.

The best candidates are at least 18 years old, have healthy eyes with adequate corneal thickness. Candidates don’t have dry eyes, corneal disease, or other eye abnormalities.

What happens during LASIK?

Make arrangements for a family member or friend to drive you home after LASIK surgery.

First, your surgeon creates a thin, hinged tissue flap on your cornea using a laser. They fold the flap back, allowing the laser to reshape parts of your eye.

Your ophthalmologist then repositions the flap and continues the same procedure on your other eye. Surgery usually lasts about 15 minutes for both eyes.

What should I expect after my surgery?

Following LASIK surgery, protect your eyes from the sun. Use medicated eye drops as directed by your ophthalmologist to enhance healing. Use artificial tears to keep your eyes comfortable and moist. The next day, you can often resume normal everyday activities but don’t rub your eyes.

In addition to examining your eyes prior to LASIK surgery, Dr. Gibbs follows up with you after the procedure and co-manages your eye health with an ophthalmologist. She assesses your vision and completes eye examinations periodically after the procedure to ensure the best outcome.
